Statement

The purpose of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is to cultivate and
encourage high scholastic and
ethical standards; to promote unity and friendship among college
women; to study and help
alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve
social stature; to maintain a
progressive interest in college life; and to be of service to all
mankind.

The chapter meets on the second Saturday of the month, except
during the summer. Local
meetings, regional, and international conferences provide training
and leadership development
opportunities for members.
·
Programs unique to the local chapter include: The Debutante Pageant
/Ball; Scholarship Awards to
high school seniors preparing for college; Senior Valentine
Luncheon; “On-Track” mentoring
program for grade school children; Shoe Boxes (filled with school
supplies/toiletries) for
Africa
;
and “Stop the Violence-Increase The Peace” Conference for 7th-
9th graders.

All members of Gamma Phi Omega Chapter are automatically
international members.

Members and Criteria
·
Basic criterion for membership in Gamma Phi Omega Chapter as a
Graduate Member is an earned
baccalaureate, graduate, or professional degree in an accredited
two, three, or four-year senior
college or university.

AAUW promotes equity for all women and girls, lifelong education,
and positive societal change.
The AAUW Educational Foundation provides funds to advance
education, research and self-
development for women. The
AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund provides funding and a support
system for women seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination in
higher education.

Meetings, Programs, & Services
·
Local branches generally have monthly meetings, board and committee
meetings, and study groups
connected with action projects, international, or cultural
interests.
·
The main focus of action projects is gender fair education for
women and girls. Fundraising
directed to the Educational Foundation which provides fellowships
and community action grants
and Eleanor Roosevelt Teacher Fellowships. The Buffalo Branch
administers the Chamberlin Loan
Fund, which funds interest-free loans to college students.

AAUW is pro-choice.

All members are also members of the Intenational Federation of
University Women.
